Fisheries Management on the Great Barrier Reef by Dr. Gerald Goeden

For many years the management of fisheries resources on the Great Barrier Reef was based on the notions of minimum sizes at capture. With this research, bag limits were also introduced to try to stem the depletion of particular species through overfishing.

What was never anticipated was that Coral Trout would be so heavily fished that entire communities would be altered in terms of species composition. It has taken from 1986 (the date of publication) until now for coral reef managers to understand the relationship between keystone species abundance and coral reef community 'health'. Sadly, understanding has come too late.
